One of today's guest speakers, Police Explorer Arpg Jangozian, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
 
Zainul Abedin led us in the Four Way Test.
 
Marilyn Gunnell shared a word of inspiration, acknowleding the love of family, friends, and fellow Rotarians in her own life and bringing to mind the joy of sharing encouragements with one another.
 
INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS:
 
Zainul Abedin introduced AP Kanna, immediate past First District Governor in District 3230 in India with 135 clubs and 6,435 members.
 
Jeanette Cordon introduced her guest Lee Stacy, District Grant Chair.
 
Tom Propst introduced his sons Logan and Lucas.
 
Ken Riedel introduced guest speakers Vahe Abramyan from the Glendale Police Department and Arpg Jangozian from the Glendale Police Explorers program.
 
In presenting a grant check to the club, Lee Stacy, District Grant Chair acknowledged the shared grant application requested by Glendale Sunrise Rotary and the Glendale Noon Rotary clubs to help purchase an electric convection oven for Homeboy Industries. With the combined grant application, the size of the District-funded grant doubles, resulting in a $4,000 grant for this initiative. 
 
 
 
CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
Ken Riedel spoke about foreign exchange students: his own experience is that it is an incredibly rewarding experience to be involved in, and he is asking for four families to agree to help host a Club-sponsored foreign exchange student for three months each.
 
Jorge Vasquez announced a visit to the Estado 29 orphanage this weekend. Frank Lopez and Ray Rangwala are coordinating this weekend's trip and there are still spaces available for anyone to join. Jorge also spoke about some of the apprehensions people may feel about international travel, helping to counter misconceptions about safety by sharing the US State Department's analysis about the safety of travel to the Baja California region of Mexico.
 
Jim Thompson announced the annual literacy and reading encouragement initiative on Monday, March 2 as part of the Read Across America program on Dr. Seuss' birthday. Additional club volunteers are needed to help meet this need.

Nina Crowe encouraged club members to use promo code "ROTARYBILLY" when purchasing tickets to Billy Elliott at the Alex Theatre (Feb. 20-22) to ensure $2 proceeds from each ticket credited back to the Glendale Sunrise Rotary club. Tickets and information at alextheatre.org.
 
Harold Scoggins announced the Glendale Youth Alliance Art Exhibit Fundraiser on March 13 and 14. Admission is free. All funds raised in art and beverage sales benefit the Glendale Youth Alliance's work in serving the young people served by GYA. Eric Hamilton announced the Glendale Education Foundation's "Denim and Diamonds" event on March 6 and paid a $10 fine. Event details at www.glened.org.
 
Nina Sonin paid a $20 fine for missing the last two meetings.
 
Peggy Smith paid $5 while sharing an update about her new construction project, and another $5 to celebrate the good news from the doctor.
 
Stephen Ropfogel paid $5 to draw attention to The Salvation Army's Drive Thru Food Drive this weekend.

SPEAKER
 
Program Chair Peggy Smith announced next week's speaker Stephen Ropfogel, who is preparing a craft talk presentation.
 
This week's speakers are Glendale Police Officer Vahe Abramyan and Glendale Police Explorer Arpg Jangozian, representing Glendale Explorer Post #104. 
 
The Explorer Program (ages 15-21) and Junior Explorer (ages 12-14) help young people develop skills in leadership, discipline, and responsibility while learning about service in law enforcement.
 
Program components include completion of the Glendale Explorer Academy, ride alongs, insight into law enforcement principles and priorities, physical training, criminal justice, and teamwork.
